These High Schools In Region Among Nation's Best According To Brand-New Rankings

It’s no secret that New York is home to some of the nation’s best schools, but which in the region rank among the top in the country?

The U.S. News & World Report released its 2022 list of the best high schools in the country after evaluating nearly 18,000 schools at all levels.

According to the organization - which touts itself as “the global authority in education rankings” - high schools were judged on these weighted factors:

  • College readiness (30 percent);
  • Reading and math proficiency (20 percent);
  • Reading and math performance (20 percent);
  • Underserved student performance (10 percent);
  • College curriculum breadth (10 percent);
  • Graduation rates (10 percent).

In New York, organizers of the rankings evaluated 700 districts and 1,325 high schools that employed 76,177 full-time teachers to educate 911,358 students.

In the region, these high schools ranked among the highest in New York:

Albany County

  • 84. Bethlehem Central Senior High School (795th nationally);
  • 99. Clayton A Bouton High School in Voorheesville (999th);
  • 284. Guilderland High School (3,036th).

Dutchess County

  • 105. Spackenkill High School in Poughkeepsie (1,071st);
  • 113. Rhinebeck Senior High School (1,171st);
  • 148. Pawling High School (1,517th);
  • 221. Red Hook Senior High School (2,277th);
  • 265. Arlington High School in Lagrangeville (2,839th).

Rensselaer County

  • 117. Maple Hill High School in Castleton (1,243rd).

Greene County

  • 159. Windham Ashland Central School (1,655th).

Schenectady County

  • 160. Niskayuna High School (1,644th).

Orange County

  • 184. Warwick Valley High School (1,907th);
  • 261. James I O'Neill High School in Fort Montgomery (2,899th);
  • 288. Monroe-Woodbury High School (3,066th).

Sullivan County

  • 190. Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Senior High School (1,945th).

Ulster County

  • 187. New Paltz Senior High School (1,911th);
  • 220. Onteora High School (2,262nd).

Saratoga County

  • 228. Sarasota Springs High School (2,399th);
  • 258. Shenendehowa High School (2,782nd).

The Best High Schools rankings take a comprehensive approach to evaluating schools," Eric Brooks, principal data analyst at U.S. News stated. "Looking at factors like graduation rates and underserved student performance, families can use this information to learn more about their local schools.”
